By Māori for Māori Komiti

The co-chairs of the committee are Prof Huia Jahnke and Prof Juan Tauri.

Huia is Professor of Māori and Indigenous Education at Massey University and has been involved in international and Aotearoa New Zealand research ethics committees, including being a member of the Massey University ethics committee, and a chair of the Health Research Council Ethics Committee. 

Juan is Professor of Criminology at University of Melbourne, and has been involved in research ethics for many years, including time on various University ethics committees. 

The tikanga for the Komiti will emerge in hui with its members and korero with researchers who would like it's advice, guided by Te Ara Tika.

Applicants to the Komiti should use the applicable social science or health application form, and we strongly encourage getting in touch with us where those forms do not meet your needs.

If applicants such as Māori community trusts or whanau or hapū are unable to afford IHREC fees, please get in touch with us. The Komiti is able to provide pro-bono review on request.

The Reviewers

Annabel (Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāti Kahungunu) sat on the University of Canterbury human research ethics committee for many years, and is currently a ministerial appointee to the Ethics Committee on Assisted Reproductive Technology (ECART).

Anaru (Ngāti Hine, Ngā Puhi) based in Te Rōpū Rangahau Hauora A Eru Pōmare at Otago University. He teaches and researches Hauora Māori and 

Shannon Hanrahan

Shannon (Ngati Manawa, Whakatōhea, Ngāi Tahu) holds a number of governance roles in Te Ao and health. He was Deputy Chair of National Ethics Advisory Committee 2021-24.

Carel (Tuhoe, Ngā Ariki Kaipūtahi) leads the tangata whenua team at the research, advice and evaluation company Tiria Ltd.

Nora-Jayne Parore

Nora Jayne Parore (Ngāti Whātua, Ngāpuhi, Ngātiwai, Te Roroa, Ngāti Kahu ki Whangaroa) is a pharmacist and researcher. She was a member of National Ethics Advisory Committee 2021-2024.

Filipo Katavake-McGrath (Kāti Huirapa ki Arowhenua raua kō Puketeraki, Tonga) is an economist and qualitative researcher with a focus on the social and economic equity of communities who have been publicly targeted by politicians and the media over many decades.

Edmond Carrucan

Edmond (Ngāti Hako, Tainui, Ngāti Porou) is a barrister of the High Court of Aotearoa New Zealand. He is a member of National Ethics Advisory Committee.

Emma (Ngāti Kahungunu ki Heretaunga) is an Indigenous Philosopher and Learning Design Specialist at the University of Canterbury. Her work spans Indigenous philosophy and postcolonial theory, and she brings to the Komiti a grounding in philosophical method alongside a sustained commitment to research that centres Māori voices and knowledge systems. Marie‑Chanel  (Te Rarawa, Ngātiwai, Ngāti Maniapoto, Te Arawa) is a current member of the University of Auckland AHREC committee with extensive experience supporting research ethics processes and kaupapa Māori research. Her work centres on enabling research environments that uphold integrity while remaining accessible, practical, and grounded in tikanga.

Pauline (Ngā Wairiki, Ngāti Apa) holds a PhD in Dance Studies from the University of Auckland. Her research  centres on place-based pedagogy, community dance, and connections to whenua for rangatahi. She is a qualified teacher and currently works in project management and Māori innovation, supporting kaupapa grounded in Whānau Ora approaches.
